Tiearea Sims is an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Intensivist in the Intensive Care Unit at City of Hope Atlanta. He provides care for patients coping with urgent situations and helps patients achieve their longer-term goals. “I am dedicated to strengthening our patients physically, mentally and spiritually,” says Sims.
Sims began his training at Fort Sam Housing Health Science Academy, where he studied emergency care among other aspects of healthcare and earned Combat Medic Certification in 2003. He then served in the U.S. Army as a Health Care Specialist and Medic, providing lifesaving treatment to injured soldiers deployed overseas.
He continued his studies at Excelsior College, where he completed his associate’s degree in Nursing in 2010. Sims then completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at American Sentinel University, followed by a Master of Science in Nursing at the University of South Alabama. Through numerous clinical rotations at large regional hospitals, Sims gained experience in cardiology, emergency medicine, gastrointestinal diseases, infectious diseases, neurology and many other areas of medicine.
Sims has more than a decade of experience providing emergency room nursing care. During and following his training, he served as a staff and charge nurse at several large hospitals, where he gained a reputation for staying calm and thinking clearly no matter the situation. His work included evaluating patients, triage, developing treatment plants, working closely with physicians, and advocating for patients, family members, and staff.
At City of Hope, Sims provides care for patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit due to acute crises. He helps identify problems and complications along with appropriate interventions. He keeps patients and caregivers informed and engaged, while following the Mother Standard® of care.
Sims is a licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse through the State of Georgia, and is certified in many types of life support. He is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
When he is not at City of Hope, Sims enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, fishing, and watching sports.
