Michael Zgoda, MD, MBA, CPE, joined City of Hope® Cancer Center Phoenix in October 2023 as an Interventional Pulmonologist, bringing with him two decades of experience. His clinical interests include thoracic oncology, pleural disease, lung cancer screening and robotic bronchoscopy. Also active in lung cancer research, Dr. Zgoda complements his calling as a physician with a track record as a medical leader, entrepreneur and inventor who holds rare quadruple board certification—in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine and sleep medicine.
Dedicated to treating patients diagnosed with lung, pleural, mediastinal and chest wall tumors, Dr. Zgoda has expertise in a host of medical procedures, including rigid bronchoscopy, invasive flexible bronchoscopy, endobronchial needle and forcep biopsy, brachytherapy placement, endobronchial stent placement, endobronchial bronchopleural fistula repair, cryotherapy, laser therapy and photodynamic therapy.
Dr. Zgoda’s goal in serving patients and families is to ensure that each individual receives thorough, multifaceted care that addresses not only immediate medical needs but also long-term health and wellness. In City of Hope, he found an organization that shares his values of collaboration, compassion and— most of all—high-quality cancer care.
“City of Hope is renowned for its high standards in patient care, research and education,” he says. “This aligns perfectly with my drive for excellence in medical practice and innovation.”
Dr. Zgoda completed undergraduate, medical and postgraduate training at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. He graduated medical school with distinction, in the top 10 percent of his class, then went on to pursue training with an internal medicine residency and a fellowship in pulmonology, critical care and sleep medicine, before completing another fellowship in interventional pulmonology medicine at the Harvard School of Medicine’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He has also earned an MBA with a focus on health care management from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Certified Physician Executive credential from the American College of Physician Executives.
A physician-scientist, Dr. Zgoda has more than 20 peer-reviewed biomedical publications to his credit. He has been the primary investigator for four clinical trials and participated as co- or sub-investigator on nine more. Several therapeutic technologies that he helped test in patients—including robotic bronchoscopy, endobronchial valves, cryo-treatment for chronic bronchitis and bronchial thermoplasty—have gone on to become the standard of care in his field. He holds a patent for a tracheotomy device that he invented.
Before joining City of Hope, Dr. Zgoda was chair of Dignity Health Medical Group’s department of medicine. The hallmark of his work as an administrator is his passion for improving quality of care: He has been physician executive with a medical group connected to an academic health system, president of the medical staff covering eight hospitals within a large integrated health system, and academic chair of medicine at the Phoenix campus of a large Catholic health-professions school. In his initial position after fellowship training, he established one of the first interventional pulmonology divisions nationwide at his University of Kentucky alma mater. He retains an appointment as professor of medicine at the University of Arizona.
Dr. Zgoda has earned several honors from the institutions where he practiced, including one system’s highest service award for doctors and recognition as physician of the quarter and top provider for patient experience. An author of books on bedside education and navigating the business of medicine, he also serves his community as a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Thoracic Society, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American Association of Physician Leaders.
Before college, Dr. Zgoda was a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps. A combat veteran who served in the Persian Gulf War, he has been awarded the Navy Achievement Medal for battlefield innovation and the Good Conduct Medal.
Outside City of Hope, Dr. Zgoda loves spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. His pastimes include staying physically active, shooting sports and international travel.
