As a physician, I seek to understand my patients, their values and their beliefs. Ultimately, it’s important to sit down with them, have that conversation and understand what they want out of their cancer journey.

Kevin Zhang, MD, knew from a young age that he wanted to pursue a career in medicine, driven by a desire to help those diagnosed with diseases like cancer receive the personalized, leading-edge care they deserve. As a Medical Oncologist at City of Hope® Cancer Center Chicago, Dr. Zhang specializes in working with patients diagnosed with a wide range of genitourinary cancers, including prostate, bladder, testicular and kidney cancer, with a focus on bringing new immunotherapy treatments into his practice.
Dr. Zhang’s path to medicine was inspired by both his father’s career as a pathologist and his own experiences as an undergraduate.
“During my freshman year in college, I shadowed a breast cancer oncologist, and that inspired me to go into oncology,” Dr. Zhang recalls. “I love the connection and relationships that doctors build with their patients and that we can use our knowledge to balance patient care and quality of life.”
The impact and power of the physician-patient relationship remains central to Dr. Zhang’s approach to clinical care—an approach that brings together his expertise in new therapies with his desire to support patients’ emotional well-being and quality of life during and after treatment. In addition to an interest in immunotherapy for genitourinary cancers, Dr. Zhang believes in collaborating with patients and their loved ones to ensure that every treatment plan is tailored to the patient’s needs and health goals.
Dr. Zhang attended Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, where he earned his medical degree, then completed an internal medicine residency at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, followed by a hematology-oncology clinical fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He has published multiple peer-reviewed publications related to a wide range of cancer types and spoken at conferences and events across the United States.
“My work inspires me to make sure that I’m doing right by my patients,” Dr. Zhang adds. “It has taught me to live life more fully and showed me how important it is to sit and connect. Ultimately, we learn life lessons from every patient.”
Dr. Zhang, who speaks some Mandarin and Spanish, enjoys traveling, exploring new parts of the world and, more recently, going on adventures as an avid birder.
