With board certification in both diagnostic and interventional radiology, Jonathan Kessler, M.D., helps detect and treat a wide variety of cancers.
Dr. Kessler joined City of Hope in 2012. He received his medical degree at University of Pennsylvania and completed his residency and fellowship training at University of California Los Angeles. He serves as Chief of the Division of Interventional Radiology.
Dr. Kessler performs a range of interventional radiology procedures and minimally invasive cancer treatments. He and his team use sophisticated image guidance to target and treat tumors in the liver, lungs, kidneys and bone. Treatments include tumor embolization (such as chemoembolization and Yttrium-90 radioembolization) as well as targeted tumor ablation using microwave, cryotherapy, irreversible electroporation/pulsed field and radiofrequency ablation.Â
Dr. Kessler and his team also treat many of the painful complications of cancer. When tumors involve nerves and bones, Dr. Kessler, along with the City of Hope multidisciplinary team, uses cutting-edge imaging guidance to perform procedures such as kyphoplasty/vertebroplasty, bone tumor ablation, nerve block/ablation and minimally invasive bone stabilization to alleviate symptoms.Â
City of Hope is also world-renowned for care of endocrine and thyroid disorders. As part of the multidisciplinary team treating thyroid disorders, Dr. Kessler leads the group of physicians performing thyroid nodule ablation.
