As an Interventional Radiologist at City of Hope® Cancer Center Phoenix, Erik Ray, MD, performs image-guided, minimally invasive procedures designed to screen for and treat many different types of cancer.
“Interventional radiologists are playing a rapidly evolving role in cancer treatment,” Dr. Ray says. “We have a diverse skill set that allows us to assist in diagnosing and treating a wide range of cancers and help us create effective treatment plans focused on a patient’s symptoms and prolonging life.”
Dr. Ray, who has expertise in a wide range of interventional radiology techniques, including image-guided biopsy, image-guided thermal ablation and liver-directed cancer treatment, was drawn to City of Hope by the opportunity to provide more patients with access to innovative and less invasive treatment and screening options. He has more than 15 years of experience as a faculty member and diagnostic radiologist at institutions in the Pacific Northwest and the Midwest.
After earning his medical degree at the Chicago Medical School, Dr. Ray completed an internship in general surgery, followed by a residency in diagnostic radiology, at the Rush University Medical Center, also in Chicago. He went on to pursue a fellowship in interventional radiology at the Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore before returning to Rush University to complete a specialized fellowship in body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
A member of multiple professional organizations, including the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America and the Society of Interventional Radiology, Dr. Ray has published peer-reviewed articles and presented on his research at numerous conferences.
Outside of City of Hope, Dr. Ray enjoys spending time with his three young children and his wife, as well as hiking, sports and travel.
