In December 2019, Dr. Deepa Bassi joined City of Hope as a Pathologist. Board certified in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology, Dr. Bassi is dedicated to providing accurate cancer diagnoses. At City of Hope, she works with a multidisciplinary team and analyzes test results to help recommend appropriate cancer treatments.
At the Phoenix hospital, Dr. Bassi works in the pathology laboratory to evaluate, diagnose and review laboratory tests and tissue samples. Dr. Bassi definitively diagnoses disease (or lack thereof) when either a biopsy or surgical resection is removed from a patient at City of Hope. Test results help the care team diagnose and stage cancer, plan treatments, monitor the disease, review treatment progress and track patient health.
“In my role as a pathologist, I work behind the scenes and serve as a guiding hand for the surgeons and oncologists,” says Dr. Bassi. “During surgery, I am responsible for commenting on the adequacy of the material obtained, the clearance of the tumor with negative margins and accurate diagnosis. Identifying and classifying disease is a vital component of the City of Hope multidisciplinary approach to patient care.”
Dr. Bassi received a medical degree and a post-graduate degree in pathology from Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, India. Following her graduation, she moved to the United States and completed her first year in anatomic and clinical pathology residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. Dr. Bassi completed her residency in pathology at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York, New York, then completed a fellowship in surgical pathology at the same hospital.
Throughout her career, Dr. Bassi has been published in several research publications and provided presentations on her work. She is an active member of professional organizations, including the American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Medical Association and College of American Pathologists.
In addition to her work, Dr. Bassi is passionate about cooking, traveling and hiking. She also enjoys spending quality time with her family.
