A bilingual Surgical Oncologist who was inspired by his father to pursue a career as a surgeon, David J. Winchester, MD, FACS, considers himself a “hands-on clinician.”
“I’ve developed strong relationships with my patients, and my goal is to maintain them and build new ones,” he says.
Dr. Winchester joined City of Hope Chicago in April 2023, working with a multidisciplinary team of cancer experts and performing a wide range of standard-of-care and sophisticated surgical procedures. In his role, he evaluates and treats patients with a variety of types and stages of cancer, primarily focusing on adrenal cancer, breast cancer, melanoma, parathyroid tumors, sarcomas and thyroid diseases. He also serves as Co-Medical Director of the Breast Program.
Growing up, Dr. Winchester was heavily influenced by his father and namesake, a renowned surgical oncologist and Dr. Winchester’s mentor, role model and advisor. As one of four children, he saw how hard his father worked and understood the sacrifices he had to make, but Dr. Winchester was inspired by his father’s dedication and commitment to his career and his patients.
After earning his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Winchester completed his general surgery residency at Northwestern University’s McGraw Medical Center, also in Chicago. He went on to finish his education with a general surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He was then recruited to Evanston Hospital and worked in the NorthShore University Health System for 28 years before joining City of Hope.
“I’ve always been impressed with City of Hope. I’m excited to start the next phase in my career with a world-renowned leader in cancer research and treatment.”
Dr. Winchester is a member of numerous societies and associations, including the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Surgical Association and the Executive Committee of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), serving as co-author of its eight-edition breast cancer staging manual. Bilingual in both English and Spanish, Dr. Winchester is also a coauthor on more than 135 publications.
Outside of City of Hope, he loves spending time with his family and enjoys the outdoors, skiing, golf and racquet sports.
