For generations, women lived with a high risk of developing breast cancer, most without ever knowing it. Today, with advances in genetics, genomics and screening and a wealth of knowledge about potential causes, women at high risk can take steps to reduce their chances of developing breast cancer.
At City of Hope Phoenix, our High-Risk Breast Cancer Program offers services for women who know they’re at risk for breast cancer or may be concerned about their likelihood of developing the disease.
No one can predict if or when she’ll get breast cancer. But the multidisciplinary team of cancer experts, genetic counselors and supportive care providers at City of Hope Phoenix will work with you to determine the level of your risk and empower you to take control.
Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) is now City of Hope®, joining forces to expand patient access to personalized, comprehensive cancer care.
You’ll meet with a counselor to assess your inherited risk and determine whether genetic testing is recommended.
For those who qualify, City of Hope provides screening with digital breast tomosynthesis or 3D mammography, ultrasound and breast MRI.
Your team of experts will help identify risk factors you can control and help you develop lifestyle strategies to reduce your risk.

Many factors are known to contribute to an increased risk of breast cancer. They include:
At the High-Risk Breast Cancer Program at City of Hope Phoenix, our cancer experts will take these and other factors into account to help determine your breast cancer risk. We’ll also work with you to determine which steps, if any, you need to take to monitor your risk and help you identify lifestyle decisions to help reduce your risk.
City of Hope has developed the Risk Management Tool (RMT) to help you determine whether you’re at an elevated risk of developing breast or other common cancers. It only takes a few minutes to answer some basic questions about yourself, your family history and your lifestyle. Once you’ve finished answering the questions, the RMT checks your risk for cancer and offers you an action plan to help you manage your risk and determine whether further tests or other interventions may be recommended.
Many of the same factors that increase your risk of breast cancer may also increase your risk of other cancers unique to women. At City of Hope Phoenix, we know that breast cancers and gynecologic cancers require special attention and expert care. That’s why we created cancer centers that focus exclusively on women’s cancers and their needs.
These programs bring together multidisciplinary teams of doctors and other clinicians with expertise in treating breast and other female cancers. The expert clinicians in our cancer centers collaborate daily and work with supportive care providers to deliver personalized treatments and side-effect management strategies tailored to your individual needs and goals.
