About Me

Mani Mahdavian, M.D., joined City of Hope Chicago in October 2017 as an Interventional Gastroenterologist, collaborating on a multidisciplinary team of cancer experts to treat patients diagnosed with pancreatic, stomach, esophageal, bile duct and colorectal cancer. An expert in endoscopic resection, endoscopic ultrasound, stenting, suturing, radiofrequency ablation and other procedures used to treat gastrointestinal (GI) conditions, he has expanded City of Hope’s expertise in the delivery of innovations in interventional gastroenterology techniques, including endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic sub-mucosal resection (ESD).

Trilingual in English, German and Farsi, Dr. Mahdavian was drawn to City of Hope for its signature model of care and reputation for groundbreaking research.

“City of Hope has a boutique approach to cancer that is patient-driven and patient-centered,” he says. “It’s a unique place, with many specialized services you won’t see anywhere else.”

Board certified in gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Mahdavian earned his medical degree from the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran, then completed a research fellowship at the University of California San Francisco in the wound healing and plastic surgery labs of the school’s Department of Surgery.

After finishing his internal medicine residency at Edgewater Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Mahdavian completed a gastroenterology fellowship at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois, then pursued additional training in endoscopic ultrasound at the University of Montreal in Montreal, Canada, and the University of Illinois in Chicago. Committed to educating and training the next generation of physicians, he returned to Lutheran General to serve on the faculty, twice earning the Teaching Faculty of the Year award—once from the Department of Internal Medicine and another time from the Department of Family Practice. He also continues to serve as Associate Professor of Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University Chicago Medical School.

A member of multiple clinical associations and boards, including the American Medical Association, the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Dr. Mahdavian continues to advance the field of gastroenterology as well as cancer treatment and prevention as a prolific leading and contributing author on numerous publications, abstracts and lectures.

Of all the factors that drive and motivate him, Dr. Mahdavian is inspired most by the patients who trust him with their care. “I want my patients to know I am here for them,” he says. “I consider them part of my family and treat them like I do my family. I tell them, ‘Call me, text me. I’m there for you 24/7.’”

Outside of City of Hope, Dr. Mahdavian enjoys boating, hiking, biking and especially watching his sons play soccer.

Patient ratings
Star ratings and comments are only available for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncologists. Gynecologic surgical offerings are not included at this time due to a different survey tool required to evaluate these services. CTCA uses a validated Press Ganey® survey, which captures patient experience feedback for the primary oncology services of chemotherapy and radiation therapy at our comprehensive care and research centers. Following industry best practice, star ratings and comments are only published for physicians with a minimum of 30 completed patient surveys.
