About Me

Dr. Barbara Buttin is a gynecologic oncologist at City of Hope Chicago. She is dedicated to caring for patients with gynecologic malignancies, including ovarian, cervical, uterine, vaginal and vulvar. She joined City of Hope in September 2021.

Patient-focused care is an integral part of improving health outcomes, that’s why Dr. Buttin centers her treatment on the individualized needs of the whole patient. She treats all gynecologic cancers using numerous therapies, including chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Dr. Buttin also incorporates evidence-informed supportive therapies to help combat cancer-related side effects. She has a special interest in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including robotic surgery and the newer application of HIPEC for ovarian cancer. Dr. Buttin is also focused on growing the clinical trials portfolio at City of Hope to provide patients with more treatment options.

Understanding her patients is a priority for Dr. Buttin. In 2018, she suffered a stroke while swimming in a triathlon. That hospitalization led to diagnosis of congenital heart defect. After months of rehab, Dr. Buttin fully recovered. By going through a life-threatening diagnosis and treatment, Dr. Buttin can relate better with her cancer patients and the physical and emotional stress they endure.

“I believe in treating each patient with kindness, dignity and respect, while providing the optimal cancer treatment,” says Dr. Buttin. “My overall goal is to provide patients personalized treatment plans while managing their symptoms to enhance quality of life.”

Dr. Buttin completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Medieval History at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She then received her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine, formerly Hahnemann University, in Philadelphia. She completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.

Working in a variety of health care settings, Dr. Buttin has over 15 years of experience as a gynecologic oncologist. She is an active member of several professional organizations including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and Society of Gynecologic Oncology.

Outside of City of Hope, Dr. Buttin enjoys spending time with her three children. She is an endurance athlete, triathlete and a marathon runner. Dr. Buttin is passionate about women’s rights and social justice in the world.

Patient ratings
Star ratings and comments are only available for medical, radiation and gynecologic oncologists. Gynecologic surgical offerings are not included at this time due to a different survey tool required to evaluate these services. CTCA uses a validated Press Ganey® survey, which captures patient experience feedback for the primary oncology services of chemotherapy and radiation therapy at our comprehensive care and research centers. Following industry best practice, star ratings and comments are only published for physicians with a minimum of 30 completed patient surveys.
